As feedwater transforms into steam in a boiler, non-volatile dissolved solids concentrate inside the boiler drum. To prevent foaming, carryover, and scale, a portion of water must be discharged as blowdown.
Boiler blowdown water is at the saturated steam temperature and pressure of the boiler (e.g., 184°C at 10 bar). Discharging this water purges massive amounts of sensible enthalpy that was already heated with expensive fuel.
Manual blowdown valves are typically cracked open wider than necessary to 'play it safe', resulting in blowdown rates of 8% to 12% instead of the optimal 3% to 5%.
Automated continuous surface blowdown controllers (Walchem W900) monitor high-temperature conductivity continuously, opening modulated motorized control valves only when TDS approaches exact ASME / EN limits.
